Designing a learning experience is thought-provoking. Facilitating the session is invigorating. This one delivered both, in equal measure.
The brief was simple: provide practical and engaging AI training on how to use AI to make people's jobs easier. The group in the room was anything but simple — Founders, Directors, Heads of Department, and Store Managers from Hirsch's, one of South Africa's leading retail operations.
The Approach
With a group that senior and that varied — from founders setting strategy to store managers running daily operations — the structure had to work at every level at once. The approach was practical, guiding the team through a clear progression:
- Gain a sound understanding of Generative AI and how it actually works
- Explore the AI landscape and the models that can assist with real business tasks
- Identify which AI models are the best fit for each individual's own role and challenges
- Learn how to apply prompt design principles to get quality responses out of any of them
The session built from understanding straight into application. Delegates weren't just told how this works — they applied their new skills directly to their own most pressing daily tasks, interactions, and challenges before the session ended.
What the Room Actually Produced
The content the group produced was genuinely useful to them, and it mapped cleanly onto five areas where integrated, informed AI use pays off:
Save time — automating routine tasks, reports, emails, and documentation.
Improve quality — more professional communications, consistent messaging, fewer errors.
Make better decisions — quicker analysis of sales data, inventory trends, and customer feedback.
Increase revenue — identifying new opportunities, optimising pricing, improving customer satisfaction.
Reduce costs — lowering inventory waste, optimising staffing, improving efficiency.
That's not five disconnected wins. That's a retail business's entire operating rhythm — from the sales floor to the boardroom — with AI now sitting inside each part of it.
Where This Goes From Here
By embracing this, Hirsch's leadership team has started an AI journey that will, without much doubt, keep the business at the forefront of its industry. The Founders and Directors in that room weren't observing from the sidelines — they were building alongside their store managers, which says as much about the culture as it does about the training itself.
The Strategic Insight
The thing that struck me most, watching this particular group work, was a reframe worth sitting with: businesses can think of large language models as a diverse, no-cost workforce, strategically deployed across every function of the business — not a single tool bolted onto one department, but a capability available everywhere at once, the moment people know how to use it.
